Composting Pile? Is that the big smelly heap you might see at the bottom of a farmers garden? Or shoved into the corner of the local environmentalists, rotting away? Yes, it is. But composting piles are not just for farmers or environmentalists. They are great resources for the planet, and for yourselves, helping to sustain and maintain the environment around us for future generations. They are easy to implement in your own garden, and need not to be simply a stinking pile of waist.

Taking a large container - usually, this is a large box, a huge bin, or a garden barrel specifically designed for the purpose of compositing. The, you will be able to safely throw away your waste and will be able to utilise it to the best of your ability, effectively recycling in your own back yard.

So how exactly does a composing pile work.

Well, compositing piles are piles which use the waste we have from things like rotting food, particularly fruit such as apples and bananas. They will also break down garden waste. If you have recently raked up all the leaves in your garden for example then these can be put into your composting pile to decompose and be used again later on your garden.

When you are creating a composting pile however, there are other things which need to be included. This things range from saw dust and straw, all the way to manure. Though it may sound odd, these are all important things. They help to make the good soil which you wish to use. Finding manure is not hard, if you cannot find it in a field, then go to a local gardening centre and buy some bags of manure to put into your composting pile.

Micro organisms will then begin to break down your waste products to help create the soil that you require. But micro organisms are living things, and as with us, they require certain conditions. One condition is warmth. You will find that if you have a bad winter, your compositing pile is not changing. Try to keep it in a warm place. But warm does not mean dry.

The micro organisms in your compositing pile will also require water. Check that it is always moist, and if it is not, then you should water your pile yourself as you may not be getting enough rain water. Your compositing pile will also require air to decompose. Make sure there are air holes within your container so that the micro organisms can continue their work.

The last detail which helps a composting pile to work is how the waste is thrown into this. Composting can be a relatively long process, and this can be made even worse if we do not cut up our food waste and make it smaller. Throwing a whole apple in their will take longer to decompose than throwing a cut up apple for example.

If everything is right, then you will find that your composting pile will work fast and efficiently. In no time, barely as little as two weeks, you will be able to have the perfect soil in which to plant your garden, or spread onto your crops.

Oklahoma City metropolitan area is populated by over a million people and it is an extremely vibrant city in the United States of America. Most of the people who live here lead very busy lives and have no time to grow a garden or look after a lawn. They are not averse, however, to appreciating the beauty and verdure seen in their area because of the efforts of the government.

Caring for the greenery of Oklahoma City poses quite a few problems for the concerned people. The reason is that even though the city does not usually face extreme weather conditions, there are certain days in summer when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Add to this the fact that the city is prone to snowfall, rain and frequent tornadoes and the lawn care professionals here have a tough task ahead of them. Lawn care in Oklahoma requires expertise and attention through out the year.

Pest management is another concern area when it comes to Oklahoma lawn care. Many parasitic plants grow here because of the type of weather found here and they end up using the nutrients and water and depleting the soil of its richness. Again, many small creatures that are not even visible to the naked eye, infest the soil and make lawn care difficult. Thankfully, Oklahoma City lawn care is aware of the harmful effects of chemicals and the organic way is slowly gaining ground here.

A good Oklahoma lawn care expert should be well versed with lawn care after snow or tornado damage; should have a lot of knowledge as to the laying of turf to meet the required standards and a great track record. A good lawn care expert should be able to give you a great looking lawn taking into consideration the various aspects of the city.

Oklahoma City is a pioneer as far as fashion statements of homes and lawns are concerned. They are very particular about landscaping and take great pride in the appearance of their lawns and gardens. Creativity is seen at its best when it comes to designing homes as well as lawns. A lot of attention is given to enhancing the shapes and colors of the landscape and the people here like to change the look from one season to the next. Landscaping occupies a very integral position in Oklahoma City.

The good thing is that the use of organic and natural lawn care products has become almost a norm in Oklahoma City. The use of chemicals is rapidly becoming a thing of the past and the entire concept of lawn care has undergone a radical change. It is almost as if Oklahoma City has reverted to an earlier and healthier age. The use of organic products, however, is essential in Oklahoma as the weather is very conducive to a large number of pests. Using chemicals in large quantities for these pests would result in unmanageable complaints regarding toxic drift and so, organic care is the most suitable for Oklahoma City lawn care. Just ensure you have the right landscaping equipment for this purpose.

A well maintained, healthy and aesthetically pleasing hedge can improve the appearance and functionality of your property. A hedge at the front and side boundaries of a property can be utilized as a buffer against traffic, general neighborhood noises and unattractive things. A well positioned hedge can also accentuate the layout of your garden and focus attention on the house and its surroundings. Those hedges placed strategically within the property boundaries have the ability to highlight pathways and divide specific areas within the garden and are extremely useful as a blind against necessary but unattractive elements of the garden such as tool sheds.

Plants that are commonly chosen for use in hedging vary in style, size and leaf structure. Taller hedges require plantings of species such as holly, thorn bushes or even wattle. Roses, camellias and barberry bushes are ideal for less formal, unstructured hedges. Shorter, lower growing plants that make great hedges include the varieties of box or smaller pine specimens, whilst a variety of fruiting trees such as apple, cherry, plum and quince can also serve as an effective and productive hedge, particularly when used around a vegetable garden. Nut trees are also popular for this use. Formal “clipped” and squared off hedges are almost always comprised of varieties of privett, which are relatively easy to train into the desired formal structure. For a more “original” look, other species of shrubbing plants, when positioned close together, can make successful hedges.

When you are planting out a hedge, the same amount of care and attention is required as for all other plants. Correct preparation of the soil is vital to optimize the health of the plants. A hedge with gaps or unhealthy straggly plants is an eyesore. Garden plants, for instance, should be of the same size when they are planted out to ensure equal growth. Correct spacing of the plants to achieve the close hedge has to be planned, as does the actual layout and structure of the hedge you wish to achieve.

If you are after a straight hedge, it is advisable to excavate a trench to the required size of the hedge. Ensure that one side is straight and set the plants so that they are aligned against this straight edge. The depth of the trench is dependent upon the requirements of the plant. Some plants will need to be planted more deeply than others. The size of the plant is also a determining factor in this.

Generally, plants used for hedging should be planted closer together than if they were to be used as a specimen plant. Those that spread outwards like bougainvillea shrub will be planted further apart than those whose growth is more upright. You should seek the advice of a gardening expert to ensure that your hedge is planted appropriate to the different species.

Having a great lawn is not an easy thing to achieve. You will always have to encounter some problem or the other and there is no guaranteed approach to steer clear of them. All you can do is resort to good treatment procedures when you have problems, so that they do not recur again.

Among the many problems that most lawns have to face, brown patch is one of the most common. Some kinds of grass like St. Augustine, Kentucky Bluegrass, Bent Grass and Bermuda are most prone to the problem of the brown patch. If you are wondering what a brown patch is, it actually begins as a small spot and then spreads on the lawn either in a horseshoe or a circle like design.

Other than the brown patch, you may face a problem with the dollar spot which is also very common. It is called the dollar spot because of its resemblance to the shape of the dollar. However, some dollar spots can also begin by resembling a grapefruit. These small spots do not remain small, because they have the potential to mix with larger ones and become very wide. They are either straw colored or brown.

Another lawn care problem that you have to deal with is Rust. If the blades of your grass have an orange and rusty look to them, then it means that they are afflicted by Rust. You can verify this further by rubbing the grass on a white tissue paper. If the paper catches an orange color, it means that your grass has rusted. Rust usually thrives in situations where there is low fertility, shade, high soil compaction or morning dew.

Apart from the problems mentioned above, slime mold is another common lawn care problem. Slime mold resembles small powdery ice crystals that have covered your grass. Do not be misled by its harmless appearance, though. Slime mold consumes organic matter that has decayed in the soil. After some time it increases in thickness and prevents sunlight from penetrating into the plant cells. This causes the grass to change into a yellow color and then die.

The best weapon for proper lawn care is awareness. If you are aware of the various problems that could damage your lawn or garden, you will be armed with the correct defensive techniques to protect your lawn. Even the slightest indication of a problem will have you ready with the treatment. This will guarantee a healthy lawn that you will look upon with pride and a sense of enjoyment after your landscaping edging exercise.

The most prominent issue with these plants though is the owner’s lack of knowledge in how to care for them leading to the plant’s demise. Stakes placed in plants offer notes that help the new owner and/or inexperienced gardener better understand the plant’s requirements to thrive in its new environment. By following the instructions for placement, care and maintenance, your houseplant can be something you enjoy for years to come.

Houseplants native to tropical climates do require special care and expertise, so starting with something listed in the “easy-to-grow-plants” is ideal for the novice. This will help you learn the in’s and out’s of cultivating and in turn better prepare you for more challenging plants.

There is a range of tropical native houseplants that can be grown inside the home. Although they were once thought to only grown in a greenhouse, recently they are more popularly used as accents in home decorating. If you’re in the learning stage, you should be careful with this variety. Climate can not be ignored. Some plants can hold up in dry heat better than others that might prefer a more moderate atmosphere. Those that flourish in warmer temperature are the most desirable for beginners.

The construction and texture of foliage help you determine which plants respond well indoors. Plants with thick, fibrous leaves are made to release less moisture. The slower the release of moisture, or transpiration, the more suitable the plant is for the indoors. This slower release rate is accomplished through sunken breathing pores, officially known as stomata, and substantial outer cuticle, or skin. The plant watering requirements are lower also.

Examples of the plants such plants are the Christmas cactus, Sansevieria, more popularly called the “snake plant” or “mother-in-law’s tongue”, and Hoya, named after the botanist, Thomas Hoy. Poor choices that you should steer clear of, because of the foliage’s rapid transpiration and thin leaves, are the Maidenhair Fern, Coleus, Cyclamen and Fuchsia. All require a humid environment which is not conducive to the indoors. Even if you were to add moisture to the atmosphere, it will ruin your furniture.

Extend the life of your houseplant, whether it be one you have purchased or a gift or a gift from a friend, by investigating and becoming well versed in its care and maintenance. In return, you will soon be a seasoned gardener with a home full of stunning foliage and flowering houseplants.

The benefits of consuming organic products, such as fruits and vegetables, are widely known. However, very few people eat organic food on a regular basis. The high cost of organic food discourages many people from purchasing it. When buying organic vegetables from your local supermarket, you can expect to spend considerably more.

Fortunately, anyone with a vegetable garden can grow organic vegetables of their own for much less than they could buy them at the store.

Nevertheless, some people avoid growing their own vegetables because they are running short on space, time and the know-how to tend a successful veggie patch. However, organic gardening isn’t as difficult as many people think.

What makes a garden organic? Most gardeners describe organic gardening as simply rejecting the use of anything chemical or artificial to control insects or to fertilize plants. Instead, they apply natural materials and methods in order to retain the health of the soil, the food, and themselves.

Organic gardeners will tell you that vegetables produced by this method contain better nutrition than those sold in supermarkets. That’s because natural materials like compost help keep the soil healthy, instead of the routine depletion and artificial fertilization used in conventional methods. Since organic fruits and vegetables grow in healthy soil and ripen naturally, they also taste better.

With an organic garden, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that your food is truly free of harmful chemical toxins. There is also the added satisfaction of doing the work, and harvesting your own crop. Just think of the fresh air you’ll enjoy, as well as the healthy benefits of exercising while you take care of your garden.

Mulching is one of the primary tips for a successful organic garden. The addition of old organic matter on a regular basis helps to keep the soil healthy and well functioning. Mulching helps the soil retain moisture, suppresses weeds, reduces temperature fluctuations, and can prevent soil crusting. Many organic gardeners notice that upon improving the health of the soil, plant disease problems readily decline.

Of course, the main reason for growing organically is to avoid the use of chemicals and commercially produced fertilizers and pesticides. This helps to maintain healthy soil across numerous growing seasons. More importantly, you can be sure that the food your family is eating is free of pesticides and herbicides.

All organic gardeners shun man-made chemicals, but many allow naturally made sprays and concoctions in their gardens. Mechanical devices, such as traps, can also be used for pest control. Another method is to allow the pests’ natural predators to enter the garden, thus allowing nature to take its course.

Converting your personal vegetable garden into a source of income may be an interesting option if organic produce continues to be costly, and if food safety remains a concern to consumers. Community projects that help your entire neighborhood can be the incentive you need to jump into an organic garden with your neighbors as well.

If you’re interested in home grown, organic vegetables that taste great and are good for your family, now’s the time to get started.

It is vital that, in any landscaping project, a pest control program is included. Unwanted insects and other problems will be attracted to the newly created environment because of the seemingly inexhaustible food supply, nicely damp soil and ideal breeding ground. Here are a few ways that you can maintain control over these pests.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes thrive in moist conditions and they will breed in any puddle. They can be eradicated using repellants, but a better alternative is the mosquito magnet. Repellants contain chemicals that can be harmful to people and the environment. Mosquito magnets kill mosquitoes without the use of these chemicals. The magnet releases a gas that resembles human breath to a mosquito and it is attracted to the machine, where is succumbs to dehydration.

Regardless whether you use a magnet or another way to get rid of mosquitoes, you should follow these rules to reduce the amount of mosquito breeding in your garden:

* Rid your garden of any pools of still, stagnant water.

* Clean any areas that collect water, such as a birdbath, daily to kill any mosquito larva.

* Keep any ponds or pools aerated and in the case of swimming pools, maintain the chlorine or salt level at all times.

* Any aquatic plants in ponds will attract mosquitoes, so check them regularly.

* Fish and other aquatic animals will eat mosquitoes, so fill your ponds with these.

* Drip irrigation will water your plants, but the soil surface will remain relatively dry.

Earwigs

These creatures are readily seen in gardens that have accumulated piles of lawn cuttings, leaves and foliage. Here are a few ways to rid your garden of these pests:

* Make it a regular occurrence to clear the garden of such debris.

* Some mulch can result in an infestation of earwig, so check your mulched areas regularly.

* Use the drip irrigation as in the case of mosquito control to maintain a dry soil surface.

* Include “bird friendly” features in your landscape. The birds will be a natural controller of the earwigs and other pests.

Controlling Animal Pests

Most gardens will seem attractive to animals. Some areas prevent the killing of these pests, so it is best to discourage them from entering your property.

Here are some tips to discourage animals such as groundhogs, moles and rabbits from coming into your yard:

* Maintain your fences and ensure they are pest proof.

* Rid your garden of areas where the animals may hide out, such as tall grass, weeds and leaf piles.

* Use objects such as pinwheels as “scarers” around your fence to discourage the more timid animals.

* Use traps that will capture the animal humanely, allowing you to free them into the wild.

Live Animal Traps

These are as they suggest, a trap that captures the animal alive, allowing for it to be released some distance from your home. There are a number of these traps available, but the best are the havahart traps. They are easy to use and come in a number of sizes. They are safe to use around children and pets. You can purchase these online from the website havahart.com.

Organic Pest Control Methods

Common organic products, most of which came from plants sources and are readily available and you may even have at home, can be mixed together to make anti-pest formulas that are powerful enough to kills pests but are not harmful to humans or to the environment. Such organic products include insecticidal soap, Neem oil, horticultural oil and seeds of various plants eg Pyrethrims. With some knowledge you can easily make your own at home.

Having to look everywhere for all your tools and lawn and garden equipment can get frustrating. It’s much better to have them stored in one place. It doesn’t need to be the garage, which is for your cars or a basement that is not a good place to store anything with gasoline involved.

A garden shed is a perfect solution for lawn and garden storage and can double as a shed for potting and re-potting plants, mixing soil for gardens and greenhouses or as a workshop to build or do projects. This enables you to have a space dedicated away from your home for specific purposes and it will be imperative to have a large enough garden shed to fulfill any multipurpose you may have.

If you are building your own shed you can create one that matches your home dcor or go with any other design that compliments your yard or garden. Of course, you will want to pay close attention to the plans you choose to make sure they have good directions, a material list and a cut list that describes how much material you will need as well as how it is cut and put together.

After you have a good set of plans you can get crazy with color and style or stay conservative. This is one way to have it your way. This is also a great time to decide if you would like to bring water, power or a telephone line to your shed and make the necessary arrangements to do so.

Safety is one of those things we sometimes think about after the project is over. There are two primary areas of concern you will want to look at with any shed you decide on whether built or bought. One is your physical safety with loading and unloading your equipment. Building a ramp is a great way to minimize that risk. The other is the security of the doors and window and the perimeter of the shed. Make sure you use good sturdy locks for any entrance area and install a security light on the exterior.

Plan your shelves and other shed accessories with care as you will want to be able to park, hang and store all kinds of different items in your storage unit. One of the best basic things to use that is functional and inexpensive is pegboard. Use it liberally and often. You just can’t go wrong with a good garden shed.

This article discusses the utilitarian function of various lawn care tips for obtaining a beautiful lawn. It also institutes an informal comparison between professional tips and personal experimentation and ultimately gives some general tips on lawn care that will always be relevant in this context.

Owning a beautiful lawn in the house has transformed more into a status symbol for people living in the suburbs today. In such a scenario, taking care of the lawn assumes as much importance as taking care of ones personal health. As a result, people are willing to spend a humongous sum of money on lawn care and a major portion of that goes to landscapers and professional lawn care service companies who impart valuable advice on creating lawns and maintaining them beautifully.

In spite of the profusion of lawn care companies and the tips you can extract from them, there still abound plenty of people who prefer to look after their lawn themselves. These people enjoy exercising their creativity and not relying too much on expensive lawn care tips. For this section of the populace, gardening is more of a passion and they look upon it as a soothing and invigorating pastime. Even these people will benefit from professional lawn care tips if they are ever exposed to it. Whether they wish to take the advice, however, is entirely up to them.

The fact is that the most powerful lawn care tips are to be had from professionals who will offer you customized services which will take into consideration the weather, the soil of your specific lawn and many other things that are exclusive to your lawn. If you employ a plan for lawn care on the basis of this, you will definitely be rewarded. Professional lawn care tips will also include advice on utilizing items found in your house for lawn care.

Anyways, irrespective of whether you are opting for professional help or planning to do it alone, there are certain tips that are applicable to everyone. Foremost among these is sufficient watering for the lawn at frequent intervals. Apart from this, aerating the soil is also a crucial factor in the roots of the grass getting enough sunlight and water. Mowing every week, seeding during spring and the fall months and appropriate fertilization are also very vital in enhancing the health and growth of your lawn.

In addition to these, getting rid of the weeds in the lawn is very important for ensuring the safety of the roots. In the course of your lawn care experience, you will definitely encounter many other tips that you could utilize effectively. Perusing literature related to lawn care, electric lawn mowers and gardening will also be of great help in getting a great lawn.
