Garden Maintenance - An Introduction

by Ron Hartfield

Summertime is a fabulous time of the year. It’s the time to get outside and have lots of fun. It’s also the time when it seems like there’s always something that needs to be done or worked on. And, tasks like mowing and weeding need to be carried out on a regular basis.

You particularly have to work on your lawn consistently to keep it looking green. If there’s been a harsh winter, there may be patches that need to be re-sown with grass seed. Using a quality fertilizer can help your grass grow thick and healthy. And, weed killers can give your lawn a professional look.

Creating flower beds in your yard can enhance the desirability of your home. But, they also produce areas where weedeaters often can’t be put to use. Adding landscaping pebbles will reduce the hours that you’ll need to spend weeding. They can also add a finished look to your lawn edge and can be bought in various colors.

The wood on your deck can take a beating during the winter. The action of snow melt, freezing and thawing can quickly attack the woods surface. Completely cleaning the wood and resealing will prevent it from rotting and needing replacing. A little time now can save you from more work at a future point.

While solar lighting fixtures are practically maintenance free, they do need to be cleaned. Any solar panels must be wiped down to help them work at their optimum. And, you should remove the glass globes and clean them well to allow the light to shine through better.

The outside of your home must be checked every summer and any chips or loose bits of siding or bricks should be attended to. Rain seeping behind any loose bits of siding or cracked bricks will cause the wood foundation to rapidly rot. Mildew or stains can be removed with preprietary products, or often simply with soap and water.

A swimming pool can give you hours of fun and relaxation, but it can also cause you hours of extra work. Water tests should be carried out every 7 days and any needed chemicals need to be added as quickly as possible. A pool filter should be used on a daily basis to remove any dirt that will clog up your pools filter.

Keeping your outside tasks carried out on a regular basis can actually save you time in the long run. There’re also many ways to eliminate some jobs, like installing automatic sprinklers. And, the less work that you have to do, the more time you can spend participating in your favorite summer activities.
