Is Organic Gardening Something For You?

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Organic gardening can be different things to different people. Some have it as a little hobby and grow a bunch of fine flowers for the fun of it. Then there are those who get serious about it and set out to grow their own food that way.

The interest in organic gardening has grown over the years. Although organically grown food can be found in supernarkets, many still prefer to produce their own. There is a special satisfaction in growing something that way, and knowing exactly how it was produced.

When doing organic gardening, you use neither pesticides, chemical fertilizers or other man-made additives. There are pest problems sometimes, but there are ways of dealing with them naturally.

People have been doing fine over the centuries without those chemicals. It is a matter of knowing what to do - like, to get rid of aphids you can for example grow marigolds next to the vegetable patch.

Many people are concerned about all the chemicals used in agriculture. Some of them may find their way into the food we eat, too. Organic gardening means you and your family don’t need to worry about such problems.

Organic gardening will involve the mysterious world of compost making. This is much more interesting than grabbing a bag of chemical fertilizer. It’s not such a dark art really, you just need to know what to use, and the more variety there is the better.

Basically, it’s a great way of using up garden and kitchen waste material. You can use your own potato and other vegetable peelings. Rose prunings will help with the texture and coffee grounds will improve the smell! Make sure all the ingredients are dry.

There are other tips for organic gardening. For the constant fight against weeds and to keep the soil healthy, you can make your own mulch by making a mixture of pine needles and grass clippings. You can also spray pests with a concoction of cooking oil, dishwasher soap and water.

Even if all you have is a tiny piece of land, organic gardening lets you feel a connection with nature - something many of us lost when we got used to going to the supermarket and those plastic-wrapped products. We feel there is a better way.

How To Make Your Flower Photographs Stand Out

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

When making pictures of a flower garden, learn some tricks from the professionals. This article shows you some simple things you can do to enhance the quality of your flower photos a great deal.

Having bright sunlight when you are taking photos of your garden and flowers is usually not the best choice, although you may enjoy the garden most on such days.

A digital camera can only do so much. It has difficulties handling a subject with very strong contrast between light and dark. Therefore, the picture may turn out not showing your subject at its best.

It is actually better if you take flower photos on a cloudy day. There is enough light, and it is not as harsh as it would be if the sun was out. On a cloudy day, the light tends to bring out the best in your flower subjects.

There are also some other tricks that you can use, to make your subjects show their best when taking photographs. Professional photographers do it all of the time and create great results.

Digital cameras nowadays always have a zoom lens. By zooming in, you get a smaller portion of the background; while if you use a wide angle setting, you get more of the background. Therefore, you can eliminate distracting details by zooming in - ie. using a telephoto setting.

The professionals have a knack for making pictures at special times of day, such as early in the morning or near sunset. This is because the light is very special then, and the pictures are likely to be more pleasing. You can try this technique also, and add new qualities to your photos.

Professional photographers often use reflectors to shine extra light where it is needed. You can try using a mirror, or some other reflective object, to bring out the beauty of some little flower standing in a dark corner of the garden. You will be amazed at the difference!

Garden Decoration is Easy With Water Features

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

A great way to liven up your garden is to add a water feature to your garden decor. Flowing water can be both soothing and really nice to look at. In fact, I’ve found that there’s nothing more relaxing than sitting on a bench next to my fountain while I read a good book. Installing a water fountain is a fairly easy task and fairly inexpensive. You will find your backyard transformed.

Usually, people install water fountains for the benefit of the natural ambience it provides. For some reason, being around a gorgeous scene of water can give you a positive outlook on life. The constant drone of the water is exactly what most people need to concentrate on what they are doing. Even if you’re not into that kind of stuff, just being in a garden with a fountain has a sort of meditative quality to it, even if you’re not trying to do so. I recommend it to anyone.

When you first decide to put in a fountain, you need to put great care into picking out one that will go well with the rest of your backyard. If you have any other decorations, you want to consider if it goes well with your garden’s theme. Does the fountain you’re considering stand out in your garden like a sore thumb, or does it look like it was always meant to be there?

If you’re like me, you can’t naturally tell whether the fountain will be a good addition to your garden just by looking at it. So my solution was to bring my sister (a natural at fashion design and that kind of stuff) along with a picture of my garden to the store. I was able to get her expert opinion, as well as see for myself what it would look like. By doing this I was able to pick a beautiful rock fountain that goes marvelously with the rest of my garden.

Electric power was my biggest obstacle for having an electrical water feature. You see, my garden isn’t very close to my house. I thought it would look pretty ugly to run an extension cord across my backyard, so I had to come up with another solution. I discussed my situation with a Home Depot employee, and he quickly found me the exact solution I needed: an extension cord meant for being buried! All it took was a few hours of digging a small trench across my yard, and I had power to my fountain without an unsightly cord running across my yard. After I got over this little hitch, my fountain plan went beautifully.

So if you’re looking for a way to make your garden a more classy and beautiful place to be, I hope you consider installing a fountain. The whole process is surprisingly inexpensive, and I think that you will be very happy with the results.

How To Water Houseplants

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

As has been mentioned before, you will want to select house plants that fit the environment and not the other way around. The temperature range in your home is very important to whether or not your plants will flourish. Plants also need “fresh air”, and exposure to gases, smoke and dust can damage your plants. Over time, air pollutants can be very harmful to your plants.

Remember to water all your potted plants from above the pot. The only exception to this concept is an African Violet plant, because exposing the leaves to water can be very damaging. It is hard to give them a proper watering without splashing them.

In other cases, watering from the top is the best way to be successful. Be sure that your potted plant is never filled with dirt higher than an inch from the top of the pot.

The best way to ensure a proper soaking of a plant, is to fill it to the brim and to allow the water to soak down to the roots until the extra water flows out of the drain holes at the bottom of the pot.

For plants that prefer being watered from the bottom, the process is just the reverse. You pour the water into the drainage pan at the bottom of the pot. You allow it to soak up through the dirt and then the soil on top will be damp to the touch. Once this is accomplished, you can rest assured your plant is properly wet.

Never allow water to stand in the drainage dish, this will cause the cause damage to the roots. Be especially careful to avoid this with any plants housed in a jardiniere. After a period of an hour, lift the pot from the drainage dish and check to make sure there is no extra water left over.

There is another method you can use when watering, it is called wick watering. This is a relatively newer system that uses a thick braided wick, to provide even watering all the way to the roots. You can even buy pots for plants that are designed strictly for this purpose at your local gardening store. The pot is on a covered saucer, on which the pots is placed, and then filled with water. The wick extends from the saucer through to the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot. As soil gets drier, water is gradually absorbed through the wick and distributed through the soil

Proper temperature is also very important, you want to keep your plants exposed to room temperatures or slight warmer. Do not water plants with cold water, because this can cause them to blight. If your tap water is “hard”, it is a good idea to install a water softener to rectify the situation.

Home Gardening: Planting Seeds and Fighting Plant Enemies

Plants in Seed

Image by Dominic’s pics via Flickr

If you save seed from your own plants you are able to choose carefully. Suppose you are saving seed of aster plants. What blossoms shall you decide upon? Now it is not the blossom only which you must consider, but the entire plant. Why? Because a weak straggly plant may produce one fine blossom. Looking at that one blossom so really beautiful you think of the numberless equally lovely plants you are going to have from the seeds. But just as likely as not the seeds will produce plants like the parent plant.

In seed selection size is another point to hold in mind. Now we know no way of telling anything about the plants from which this special collection of seeds came. So we must give our entire thought to the seeds themselves. It is quite evident that there is some choice; some are much larger than the others; some far plumper, too. By all means choose the largest and fullest seed. The reason is this: When you break open a bean and this is very evident, too, in the peanut you see what appears to be a little plant. So it is. Under just the right conditions for development this ‘little chap’ grows into the bean plant you know so well.

From large seeds come the strongest plantlets. That is the reason why it is better and safer to choose the large seed. It is the same case exactly as that of weak children.

But take the case of large seed, like corn for example. Corn is planted just so far apart and a few seeds in a place. With such a method of planting the matter of per cent, of germination is most important indeed.

Fighting Enemies

The devices and implements used for fighting plant enemies are of two sorts: (1) those used to afford mechanical protection to the plants; (2) those used to apply insecticides and fungicides.

For applying poison powders, the home gardener should supply himself with a powder gun. If one must be restricted to a single implement, however, it will be best to get one of the hand-power, compressed-air sprayers. These are used for applying wet sprays, and should be supplied with one of the several forms of mist-making nozzles, the non-clog gable automatic type being the best. For more extensive work a barrel pump, mounted on wheels, will be desirable, but one of the above will do a great deal of work in little time. Extension rods for use in spraying trees and vines may be obtained for either. For operations on a very small scale a good hand-syringe may be used, but as a general thing it will be best to invest a few dollars more and get a small tank sprayer, as this throws a continuous stream or spray and holds a much larger amount of the spraying solution. Whatever type is procured, get a brass machine it will out-wear three or four of those made of cheaper metal, which succumbs very quickly to the, corroding action of the strong poisons and chemicals used in them.

As a final word to the intending purchaser of garden tools, I would say: first thoroughly investigate the different sorts available, and when buying, do not forget that a good tool or a well-made machine will be giving you satisfactory use long, long after the price is forgotten, while a poor one is a constant source of discomfort. Get good tools, and take good care of them. And let me repeat that a few dollars a year, judiciously spent, for tools afterward well cared for, will soon give you a very complete set, and add to your garden profit and pleasure.

Designing Your Garden

Monday, December 8th, 2008

The walkways you install into your landscape can make your garden more accessible, retain its beauty, and ad to the overall design. They are an integral part of your garden’s look and feel. Functionally, walkways offer a path through your garden that allow people to traverse them without disturbing the plants, grass, and other things you’ve set out for them to enjoy. It doesn’t take long for the places where people often tread to start to look trampled and faded if there are no walkways to protect it.

The beauty of walkways comes from the aesthetic mix of both the materials used and the shapes they and the walkway’s path take. Just as color can make them match or clash with the overall ambiance of your garden, their shape can either cut through the design or flow with it beautifully.

There are a variety of materials to make walkways from, each with its own design elements and functional properties. Interlocking concrete blocks and cobble-stone style bricks are the most popular choices. A bed of either heavy sand or small-pebbled gravel is usually laid and then the interlocking bricks are hammered into place using a wooden or rubber mallet. Bricks are laid in a similar fashion, being pressed together and tamped into place to firmly set them. This “floating” foundation allows the ground to heave with frost or moisture without dislocating the pathway.

Walkways are so integral to the design of a well-made garden than they are usually planned right from the beginning sketches and drawings before work even begins. Elements like bordering flowerbeds, concrete or rock edges, or bark strips are common walkway enhancers, defining the path’s edges for the eye.

Well-made walkways will have a slope or “crown” to them (a hump in the middle) that allows water to drain off so that it does not puddle on the walkway. This makes the walkway safer to traverse, cleaner, and keeps puddles from forming for mosquitoes to congregate in. The bricks and stones used are usually well-textured so that they have a good frictional quality to give a good grip when walking on them, minimizing slipping and dangerous falls.

Other common elements that are included in walkways are casual seating areas (benches, platforms, etc.), handrails for bridges or raised areas, or lighting elements for nighttime ambiance, and perhaps a great pool background to enhance the whole area. Other additions such as bird baths, feeders, squirrel hutches, pet-friendly plants, and other additions can make lively animals move in and around the walkway to give great entertainment and life to the gardens around the walkway.

Gardening tips to speed up your results

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

There is a wide range of information available on the internet, gardening clubs, books, magazines and the local nursery which could provide you with valuable guidance on your first attempt at gardening. What type of fertilizers should you use? What about mulch and the kind of soil that the plot has? Firstly, what types of tools including the kind of tiller and watering systems which are required to get you started.

If you write down what you plan to do with your garden you can save a lot of time. A second opinion from a friend sometimes helps as they will think of things you have not considered.

The garden is a success if the soil is prepared well. Using organic fertilizers for vegetables and herbs is a must, if you wish to retain the natural flavor of the food. Wood chip mulch and a good compost can be an alternative to ordinary fertilizer.

Having a backyard compost heap is a great idea. Though fresh home brew compost is an excellent source of nutrition for your vegetable and herb garden, it may not always be possible. Mulch is a good substitute for a home compost mixture but make sure to use the softer woods like redwood or pine because the faster it breaks down the better. Whatever you use, mulch, compost or fertilizer, just make sure that they are mixed well.

Lay the plants on top of the soil to check once and for all how your garden would ultimately look like. I believe that plants having similar characteristics should be planted together. For example, any plant with a large girth should be clubbed with other plants with similar characteristics. Then have the taller plants in the back and the shorter ones in the front to maximize space; this makes it easy to see everything.

If your garden is very big, then watering a garden can be very hard work. I recommend using an automatic watering system,as then the garden can grow on its own. An automatic system can range from a large sprinkler to a timer attached to a hose sprinkler. Gardening is not always hard work and you will reap the rewards.

Putting A Houseplant In Your Home

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Just because you may live in an apartment, does not mean you cannot enjoy the beauty of houseplants. While the prospect of lawn care is removed, this does not mean you have to restrict yourself to plastic plants. There are several beautiful varieties available and your options are limitless.

Consider the environment of the room you would like to enhance. This will help you decide where to place your plants. Perhaps your bathroom could use some sprucing up! Because this is the most humid room in the house, you have to consider which type of plants will thrive in this atmosphere. There are plenty of places besides the kitchen window sill, where you can put plants to beautify your home.

You may even consider using dried, silk or artificial flowers in place of live plants, in your garden. Dried roses, lavender, african violet flowers, or babies breath will look absolutely stunning tied in a bow and placed in various location. The advantages of using dried flowers or herbs is that they are fragrant and last for a long time; not to mention that you do not need any care instructions guide just to have them last for a long time.

You could even use one of your rooms specifically as a greenhouse. This area would be designated as your indoor gardening space. It should be a room with large windows or perhaps you could use a balcony, if you have one. Adding overstuffed chairs, fluffy pillows and soothing colors will make this room a favorite all year round.

Many people who live in apartments, find creative ways to garden indoors. They have herb gardens, that are commonly located on a window sill in the kitchen. This makes them easily accessible for you when cooking. You can buy herb seeds in a kit or you can go to your local garden center and get the seeds and some decorative pots. Herbs provide a variety of wonderful aromas and grow in strong sunlight. Just think of how good your food will taste with fresh herbs added.

How to get rid of grubs in your lawn

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

This article talks about the devastation caused to your lawn by the presence of grubs. It outlines ways and means by which you can get rid of grubs in a safe and effective manner.

Maintenance of a lawn is very important for it to look beautiful and healthy. One possible damage to a lawn comes from grubs. In fact, the extent of harm from grubs can be quite considerable and preventive steps should be taken as soon as possible. Wilting of grass and the presence of wildlife and birds in your lawn is an indication of the fact that your lawn has been infested by grubs. If you find small holes in the lawn, then it could be because of small animals having tried to uproot the grubs. Generally, possibility of grub infestation is high during dry weather, particularly the time between spring and fall. Before starting with treatment for grubs, do make sure that the problem is actually with grubs and nothing else. The good part about treatment of grubs is that it is not a very difficult procedure as grubs can be seen immediately under the lawn soil.

The only care you have to take before treatment is to verify the kind of insect that is present in the soil. If your soil is infested with white grubs, then it is the larvae of beetles and it is usually white, fat and seen in a C shape. These beetles have six legs and a brown head and take two years to transform into a matured beetle. The best time to treat them is during warm weather, when they are usually feeding. As long as no grub infested area is left untreated, grub removal is easily achieved.

However, it is always better to stop grub infestation before it starts rather than worry about the treatment procedure. This applies to grub infestation, also. If you take certain measures beforehand, you will not be afflicted by the problem of grubs and you won?t have to spend time in treating them. The best cure for not letting grubs enter your lawn is to place bacteria that give rise to milky spore disease in your garden. The great thing about these bacteria is that it does not let grubs appear in your lawn and it has no other side-effects on your lawn. Apart from this, the bacteria can function for a great number of years and is very useful, particularly when used before the infestation has begun. If the lawn is already infested, then the bacteria do not have a very impressive effect on your lawn and it will take considerable time for you lawn to be rid of the grubs.

Apart from this, there are microscopic worms called nematodes in the soil which attack the white grubs. They are very small, but perfectly capable of destroying the grubs. The way they function is by entering the grubs? body and then giving out a poison which finishes off the grubs in around two days time. Rather than resorting to chemicals, nematodes are a very effective way of doing away with grubs. This should be an essential learning from your supplies gardening exercises.

The right way to look after your lawn

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

This article talks about how some basic steps will ensure that you get a great looking lawn. The article also talks about the proper way to mow your lawn, and the fertilizer to be used for your lawn.

If you are one of those people for whom a great lawn matters, then there are certain things that you need to do. To begin with, do not anticipate instantaneous results. You have to be willing to put in a lot of hard work. The problem with most people is that without any hard work, they want solutions. As with everything else, this is not going to work even in the area of lawn care.

So, if you really desire a good-looking lawn, you have to make a detailed plan for your garden. See to it that you schedule a routine for your lawn. This will make it easier for you to keep in mind the things that you need to do annually for your lawn. Along with this, try and obtain quality commercial equipment for maintaining your lawn and also make use of great products available in the market to promote the health of your lawn.

Before beginning with lawn care, gauge how your lawn is faring at the present. You have to check whether the grass is bouncing with health or it is drooping, whether your lawn exhibits the presence of weeds and if it does how bad the situation is. If your grass is drooping, then you have to try and find the degree of dryness. A good idea of these and other essential factors will help in proper planning for lawn care.

After assessing the state of your lawn, you can start thinking about the steps that need to be taken. A good idea would be to begin by mowing the lawn. Do not abandon the plan if you find that the length of the grass is negligible. Giving one more mowing is always going to benefit your lawn. The fact about mowing is that people often underestimate the seriousness of mowing. Many people assume that simply running the lawnmower over the grass is what mowing is all about. This is a fallacy.

First of all, you have to ensure that the lawnmower has sharp blades. This is very important because otherwise there is a possibility that instead of cutting the blades of the grass, the lawnmower is only shredding the blades which results in the lawn having an unkempt look. While mowing the garden, a good idea would be to cover the lawn by taking as many directions as possible. This means that you should go diagonal, clockwise and counter clockwise to get that clean look for your lawn.

Apart from lawn mowing, you need to reach a proper understanding of the condition of the quality of soil in your lawn. The best idea would be to go for a soil test. With the help of a soil test, you will be able to find the levels of potassium, lime requirements, pH and phosphorus in your lawn. To find out the level of nitrogen, a soil test will not help and so you will have to find other ways to do this. Generally, compost is a great fertilizer to provide the needed nutrients to your lawn and is used in most of the front yard landscape designs exercises.
